Going to Work with Sciatica

Sciatica is a debilitating set of symptoms that affects every aspect of life. Pain from sciatica is found in the lower back, often radiating down into the leg. Sharp, shooting pains, burning aches, and sometimes numbness, can make it difficult to sit comfortably or move around. Going to work with sciatica can be immensely difficult. Even though sciatica pain can be severe, there are some methods that may help the pain more manageable. It is important to know your own body to best manage sciatica symptoms. Try many different methods of pain management, until you find what works best for you.


Talking to your doctor is the most important step in learning how to manage sciatica symptoms. When the thought of going back to work with sciatica pain is unbearable, ask your doctor for help. It is very important to find a doctor that you trust and with whom you are comfortable. First, your doctor will determine why you are experiencing sciatica symptoms. Sciatica is caused by pressure on one or both sciatic nerves. These nerves come out of the side of the spine and run down through the buttocks and legs. There are many different reasons why sciatic nerves become under pressure. A herniated disc is the most common cause. Once your doctor has determined why sciatica symptoms are occurring, your doctor will explain possible treatments, including exercises, medications, or surgery. Stick with your treatment plan, as it may take some time to start working well.

Going to work with sciatica can either improve or worsen symptoms. If the job is physically demanding, then the sciatic nerve may be under more pressure, which will cause more pain. However, too much sitting can also worsen symptoms. It is best to not overwork your body, but be sure to get up and move around often. The symptoms are often reduced by simple sciatica exercises, performed regularly. Remember to listen to your body, and finds what works best for you.

Talking to other sciatica sufferers can also be very helpful. Not only will you find others who are sympathetic and understanding of the distress caused by sciatica, but you may also learn more tips in dealing with sciatica at work. Working with sciatica pain or numbness is challenging, even impossible at times. Be sure to give your body time to rest and heal, and keep figuring out what works best for dealing with your sciatica at work.
