Sciatic Pain and Weight Gain

Pain and depression are not the only effects of sciatic pain. Many sciatic pain sufferers gain weight as a result of being less active and less motivated to exercise.

Sciatic pain often inhibits people from following their regular exercise routines resulting in muscles to become weak, and slows down the metabolism (the rate of which your body burns calories) So how does someone with bad sciatic pain prevent from gaining weight while treating their sciatica.

Here are a few tips.

Stay Positive and Focused

Negative thoughts and attitudes will only decrease your motivation and keep you from doing what little exercise you are still able to do. Negative thinking will also influence your food choices and eating habits.

You can stay positive by doing things like, setting goals, reading inspiring books, or listening to great audio programs. Find something or someone that inspires you. This young man who has become a champion wrestler, oh by the way did I mention he has no arms or legs.

Exercise and Strength Training

If your legs and back are bothering you, there is no point in letting the rest of your body weaken. There are dozens of stationary exercise you can do seated to keep your arms, shoulders, and upper back strong. Get yourself a cheap set of light weight dumbbells or exercise bands.

You may also want to consider Yoga or Pilates for sciatic pain. These forms focus on stretching and strengthening without the vigorous efforts of running.

Water therapy is also a common way for people suffering from sciatic pain to still get in some exercise. The water creates a little resistance and you can get a great workout in a pool.

 

Make Healthy Food Choices

Everything changes when you are in pain. It effects your daily routine and even your eating schedule. Try to stick to a strict eating schedule. When you don't plan ahead or have the right foods in the house, you will often opt for fast food, or whatever happens to be left in the fridge.

 

Sciatic pain is bad enough as it is. Don't let yourself gain weight as a result of it. Follow these three recommendations and you will keep the wait off while you work on treating that sciatic pain.
